Round 14: The Italian Grand Prix at the Monza circuit

The race weekend in Italy at the super-fast Monza circuit took place over the weekend of 1 to 3 September.

Qualifying on the Monza circuit

During qualifying in Italy, the teams again had to stick to a modified tyre format, using the hard tyre in Q1, the medium tyre in Q2 and the softs in Q3. The Alpines performed moderately and both failed to reach Q2. Liam Lawson, filling in for Daniel Ricciardo again this weekend, made it to P12, just behind his teammate Yuki Tsunoda. In Q3, Charles Leclerc set the first fastest time; Max Verstappen broke this time. Carlos Sainz cleared under this by 0.013 and took pole at Ferrari's home race.

The run-up to the start went differently than planned as Yuki Tsunoda crashed out on the warm-up lap with engine problems. This delayed the start for 20 minutes. The official start went quietly at Monza, with everyone getting through the first few laps in one piece. Carlos Sainz retains his pole position and only after 15 laps does Max Verstappen manage to overtake him. Incidentally, Verstappen is not seen again for the rest of the race. Both Ferraris are battling each other for a podium spot in their home race, which creates some tension. In the end, Sainz manages to cash in and takes third position, behind Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez. Max Verstappen also breaks the record for most consecutive wins.
