Alonso promises 'consequences' over Red Bull swap rumour

Fernando Alonso has promised that there will be "consequences" after a rumour was spread that he could be in line for a shock change to Red Bull in 2024.

Following the Mexico City Grand Prix, a Spanish journalist tweeted his disbelief over an apparent rumour he had been told, with this understood to now that Alonso was set to replace the underfire Sergio Perez at Red Bull for 2024.

Red Bull boss Christian Horner has maintained that it is the team's intention to keep Perez on for 2024, with it not being a prerequisite to finish second in the Drivers'.

Perez's hopes of doing so took a dent in his home race in Mexico following his Turn 1 desperation that eventually allowed P2 finisher Lewis Hamilton to almost half the deficit from 39 points to 20 with three rounds remaining.

Alonso is on a "multi-year deal" with Aston Martin, having joined the team ahead of the season from Alpine - and was far from happy of the suggestions he could be looking to leave the team which he has scored seven podiums for.

Alonso voices displeasure

"Paddock rumours are normal, but people out there just try to make fun of it and gain some followers and these kinds of things," Alonso told media including RacingNews365.

"But I am not into that game.

"I am not enjoying the rumours because I appreciate that all of you are journalists, professional people who have been in Formula 1 for many years, and you gain your respect - and this is how it should be.

"The rumours are coming from people that are not in this room and just here to make fun and I think it is not funny when they play with anything.

"The thing that they are [questionning is my loyalty], but I will make sure that there are consequences."

When asked to elaborate on what these potential consequences would be, Aston Martin's press attache stepped in to prevent the two-time World Champion from providing an answer.
