Red Bull advisor Dr Helmut Marko has claimed the rumour that Fernando Alonso could replace Sergio Perez at the Milton Keynes-based squad was created by the Spaniard himself.

Rumours appeared online in recent days that linked Alonso to the World Champions amid Perez's difficult run of form.

Perez currently has a contract in place until the end of the 2024 season but question marks have been raised regarding his future with the team amid a troubling campaign.

Last time out at the Mexico City Grand Prix Perez crashed out on the opening lap to the disappointment of the attending fans.

Alonso has also been enduring a difficult time at recent races with Aston Martin slipping down the pecking order after commencing the year in podium-finishing fashion.

The Spaniard hit out at the rumour ahead of the Sao Paulo Grand Prix and suggested that there would be “consequences” for the speculation.

But speaking to F1-Insider, Marko has suggested that the rumours were sparked by Alonso himself amid Aston Martin's declining form.

"I can well imagine that Alonso spread the rumours himself," he said. "This is because the results at Aston Martin have been very disappointing recently.

“It would not be the first time that he has used the Spanish media to stir the pot.

“Again, we only have sporting goals in mind. We want to win all the remaining races and finish second in the championship with Checo."
